classic Michigan dry fly · mid-1970s
Schmidt's Yarn Body Hex
Unverified origin Only the archive card, contributed by Schmidt himself.
History
Ray Schmidt, who learned to tie from his uncle Clarence Roberts, designed this Hex spinner in the mid-1970s to look different from the usual all-deer-hair drake.
A yellow sparkle-yarn belly shows under the deer-hair back, and the spent goat-hair wings carry a little glow flash. Schmidt charges the flash with a flashlight and drifts the fly in the evening or after dark.
